The Nostos Project

Return to Greece

What is The Nostos Project?

After the Trojan War, Odysseus journeyed for 10 years and against all odds arrived back home to Ithaca. This epic journey was known as his νόστος (nostos) or ‘return’. Like Odysseus, there are many of us diaspora Greeks throughout the world who long to return home. Many of us have ancestors who left Greece for Australia, the United States, Canada or Europe maybe one or two or ten generations ago.

We remain ethnically Greek but are culturally unfamiliar with the modern state of Greece and find it difficult to reconnect. The Nostos Project was founded by diaspora Greeks who have relocated to Athens in order to help others do the same.

About the Nostos Project

Understanding the Modern Greek state

We are planning our first community tour for 10-15 Greeks who have grown up in the diaspora and want to understand the foundation of the modern state of Greece. This is not just a tour but the growing of a community and an opportunity to connect and share stories with other Greeks from the diaspora.

N.B. we partner with a local Athens-based travel agent to provide the accommodation and travel.

  • Arrival in Athens; introduction and welcome dinner.

  • Visit to the Hellenic Parliament, the historical museum (‘the Old Parliament’) and other significant places for modern Greece such as the Polytechnion.

  • Coach to the Monastery of Agia Lavra in the Peloponnese where the flag of the Greek War of Independence was raised in 1821.

  • We will visit the beautiful city of Nafplio which was the Greek capital from 1828 until 1834 and where Kapodistrias, the first President of Greece, was assassinated.

  • We will take a ferry to the island of Aegina, known for its organic pistachios, which was the home of the first Greek government from 1816-1828.

  • Return to Athens for a final day of sightseeing and visiting ancient sites such as the Acropolis. Departure.
